Welcome to The Little Lapidary Learning Center — a growing collection of guides, fact sheets, reference materials, and practical information for anyone interested in rocks, minerals, gemstones, and lapidary.

You don’t have to be a geologist to enjoy rocks, and you don’t have to be an expert to start learning about them. The goal of the Learning Center is to make useful information understandable, practical, and interesting—whether you are a beginning collector, buying your first cabochon, learning to cut stones, or have been involved with rocks for years.

Learning Series

The Learning Series covers subjects that deserve a little more explanation. These guides explore topics such as turquoise, ultraviolet fluorescence, organic gem materials, optical phenomena in gemstones, agates and jaspers, cabochon making, and other aspects of lapidary and gemology.

Many include downloadable PDF guides that you can read, save, or print for your own reference.

Fact Sheets

Not every interesting rock needs an entire guide.

Our Fact Sheets are shorter introductions to individual minerals, gemstones, and lapidary materials. They focus on what the material is, where it comes from, what makes it interesting, and things collectors or lapidaries may want to know.

Topics include materials such as grape agate, velvet malachite, pyrite, and more.

Turquoise

Turquoise deserves a section of its own.

Built From Curiosity

The Learning Center is not intended to be the final word on any of these subjects. Geology can be complicated, terminology is not always used consistently, and new information has a way of changing what we thought we knew.

That is part of what makes this hobby fun.

These materials are created to share what I have learned through lapidary work, collecting, research, conversations with other rockhounds and lapidaries, and plenty of questions along the way.

This collection will continue to grow as I learn more and find new subjects worth exploring.

Questions, Suggestions & Corrections Are Welcome

Learning works better when people share what they know. If you have a question, an idea for a future topic, additional information about something covered here—or you spot something that you think I got wrong—I’d like to hear from you.

Corrections are welcome. The goal is to make these resources as useful and accurate as possible, not to pretend I know everything about rocks.
